Being Politically Correct, fashionably!

As of 5pm (London time) today Michelle Obama becomes not only the First Lady of America, but the First Lady of colour in the White House- wow I hear the world gasp. Well that’s definitely an “about time” moment but I am afraid that is not the first I am going to talk about today. I am instead going to discuss her being one of the "the first” women in the last couple of years who have been hailed not for just being the wife of a President/Prime minister but instead for having a great fashion sense worthy of a mention in fashion magazines.

Never since Jackie O' have we witnessed such great fashion sense from the women of politics. It was after witnessing the likes of Margaret Thatcher’s rather old-before-my-age fashion that we all came to accept that these where women who seemed to be happy to choose having brains over looking good.

Come on I know you agree with me! 10 years ago if a woman who was involved in politics, whether on their own or because of their husbands, they were always viewed as boring, dowdy and quite frankly invisible individuals. They barely graced the fashion magazines, and they never even got any column inches in a low down rag unless it started with the words ”the wife of..." – because it seemed that their name was not worth a mention.

Nowadays we have got Carla Bruni (the wife of French President Sarkozy) and Michelle Obama (soon to First Lady to US President Obama) gracing the pages and sometimes covers of well known magazines like Elle, InStyle and even (shock, horror) Vogue.

Things have sure changed. I even find myself wardrobe watching their outfits and trying to emulate some of their fashion sense. Saying all that I must still say that Jackie O' is still the reigning queen of fashion when it comes to the most fashionable politician's wife, but Michelle and Carla are certainly in the same league and who knows they might in the future come out on top- just not right now!

Oh by the way I should give a mention to our dear Cherie Blair – England’s ex-Prime Minster’s wife- because although she certainly was no style icon, by God she did try, and like Hilary Clinton (wife of Ex-President of America Bill Clinton) we give her A* for at least attempting- because in fashion there is room for second place!
