Thanksgiving Fashion dinner at Maddox

Thanksgiving 50's American style

Eyes hidden behind my black Jacqui O's to avoid direct contact with the light of the computer screen, I am nursing the most accomplished hangover I have had in a long time. If this fate had fallen on Champagnista M's head, I can tell you right here right now that she would be curled up in agony in the left corner of her sofa with a hot water bottle on her stomach.

I am a veteran and -not ashamed to say it, too much of a party girl to deny it- a social drunkard, so I am at work, and even managed to make it on time this morning after 3 hours' sleep... and finishing off my flatmate's peanut butter with a spoon at 4am.

Dreadful flashback. I am not sure that the fat saved me from a worse morning feel or made it better, I am pretty nauseous, very slow, and absolutely appalled at the idea I ate about 600 full-fat calories that are going to sit straight on my ass in a couple of hours. I might have to stop eating all together for the next two days… Although it doesn’t seem like a problem right now, since I absolutely cannot stomach the thought of any type of food. Oh the bad hangover pun! If I was not so numb and incapable of any emotion at present, I think I might cry.

I did have a pretty good night yesterday: shame to have to pay for it this bad now… I was invited to a fashion dinner at Maddox, which is the place to be on Thursday nights like Whisky Mist is on Wednesday nights. I arrived there at 10pm, because the dinner started fashionably late, and found myself in the company of models, models and models, and Burlington Man, whom I should now call Maddox Man but since he has (definitely) not changed since he moved from the Burlington Club it might be a little misleading. He is now dating a beautiful Russian model with big breasts and dove wide blue eyes, who gave me a detailed enough account of the afternoon they had just spent in his bed… Obviously she did not know I had been there, but why on earth would she trust me with this kind of information after having met me 15 minutes before? I swear to God sometimes I wish I were not French and girls did not think I want to hear all about their sex lives…

Burlington Man being American, he hosted this Thanksgiving dinner New York style, and I must admit the food was gorgeous. No Thanksgiving starter, but a Thanksgiving starting tradition where everybody had to say what they were thankful for (you imagine the marshmallowesque comments people came up with, someone had to be outrageous and say that they were thankful for the money they made before the end of the round!). Fortunately it didn’t end with ‘God bless us all’ because on the subject of God’s existence, as Sacha Guitry would put it, now would be a good time for a small apparition… I don’t like religious feasts that much, as you can imagine.

At any rate I believe Thanksgiving is not so much a religious celebration as a commemoration of a massive slaughter by the first American pilgrims. All in all though, the lobster tail was delicate, and the turkey beautiful, and the mini pumpkin pies quite adorable. Even if I feel like I could puke just thinking of them now. The company was jolly and very beautiful, and it looked like the girls had agreed on a 1950’s wavy hairdo and red lips unity, although it was apparently a total coincidence. Not necessarily the most challenging of conversations, but there is something truly magic about beautiful and well-dressed people: contemplating them gives you pleasure like you would feel only at watching a moving work of art.

And the wine was good. Very. Good. Ooooooh, my head!

Matthew Williamson for H&M

H&M have just launched their new Winter line created by comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo, and they found the way to bring some more exciting news on the fashion table by announcing a new hot design partnership with a colourful English Boy we love: Matthew Williamson.

As you know, cheap clothes are cheap clothes and the quality is never guaranteed, but it will be a collection to watch for when it hits the stores in April 2009. Don't forget the Stella McCartney and Cavalli pieces from the previous collaborations with the Swedish warehouse did not last long, so don't miss the opening day.

My-Wardrobe.com launches Men's Accessories line

One thing I dread about Christmas is the shopping quest you have to go on for the men you cherish. Even when it comes to my brothers, whom I love dearly and know to the tips of my black fingernails, Christmas shopping turns into a real crusade. I usually end up getting them a Quentin Tarentino or James Bond retrospective, because I can never be sure I will find a perfect, stylish, made-for-them addition to their wardrobe (not to mention that one of them is working for Rostchild so I cannot quite match his expensive tastes nowadays... damn money!).

However, My-Wardrobe.com just launched a shopping online page devoted to men's accessories, and they have a really interesting selection of designer wallets, ties, cufflinks and more cheerful items like a set of colourful Paul Smith toothbrushes (which I am considering purchasing for my banker of a brother just to see his face when he opens the giftwrap, since he always says that he doesn't need anything and I should get him a book or something because he can afford whatever he wants... Looks like the credit crunch hasn't touched him yet).

Another choice would be the beautiful Mulberry leather messenger above, but I think I might have to wait for My-Wardrobe online sales before I can fall in love with this bag on my brother's behalf.

Vintage Academy

I have just learned a new word. It is the fourth this week, after 'weevil' (which I turned into ‘weavel’ for sentimental purposes, my weavel is going to be my little flame-haired inspiring fairy in harsh times from now on) , 'hose' (this one was applied to a fireman stripper during the conversation so I got a little confused), and 'knackered' (which I looked up but for some reason it is not in the Oxford dictionary). I like words, I revel in words, I just love mix and matching them to craft a purposeful, meaningful, beautiful speech. I never quite manage it though, but the game of tending to it is quite rewarding in itself.

Anyway, today's word is 'academe' and I came upon it looking for fashion news on the internet. If you look at Wikipedia, which I am a total sucker for (I confess I have quite a library rat side, shame on me), you learn that ‘Academia or Academe or the Academy is a collective term for the scientific and cultural community engaged in higher education and research'. I knew Academy of course, and I am still wondering if there is not a twist to ‘Academe’ with an E. Especially since I have heard that anyone could actually write articles on wikipedia, so that their content must not be accurate all the time (tricky knowledge).

Vintage Academe is launching tomorrow, Monday 24th November: it is a new shopping online website dedicated with all its soul to vintage fashion, and if you follow its editorial page it will soon educate you into a competent vintage fashion shopper.

Three women got together to start this project: Whistles founder and former Liberty creative director Lucille Lewin, fashion journalist Belinda Morris , and Clare Nicholls, vintage fashion lover and financial director for the company. The trio came up with the brilliant and unthought of idea to bring poetry to online fashion retail. The website proposes a selective choice of unspeakably stylish fashion pieces from the 20th century (like the white tailored Courreges coat above), jewelry, hats and different accessories as well as luxury after-care products and tips to keep the articles you buy online in good state. You can also purchase vintage issues of fashion titles like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar from the earliest times of these magazines, and go on the Academe editorial page to learn more about vintage fashion and throughout the world vintage fashion events -r 'academes', as they are called if it is one of their own events).

The items on sale are not that cheap, but every single one of them is unique and out of time: one of these garments that are so beautifully made it will live across trends and time to bring elegance today from surprisingly far away times, reminding you that style has no age. It just has colours, shapes and is brimming with life.

On Beauty

I have reached the stars today.
It is 2 am. I have not blogged in a few days, because I have been so incredibly busy working and sorting out the next Champagnista party, which is arriving at full pace now, but today I am confident it is done. The venue, the sponsors, the music, the photographer, some canapes. I think everything is there, finally. And as for the people, I know you people will turn up, and it is going to be a gorgeous night.

So today, as much as I thought I should get online when I woke up, I decided to take a step back and allow myself a little bit if introspectivity (sorry if I am coming up with weird neologisms, not being English I feel like I'm allowed to take a break from English rules and give way to some raw creativity sometimes).

I guess it might have to do with some kind of poetic vibe... in the air... in the dark jet black of this clear London night sparkled with scattered stars. I have slept 'that' much since last monday, and it is not that much. And yesterday I had promised myself a quiet night, and then somehow... Well somehow I got back home at 4:30am after a very unexpected night. Magic is better unspoken so I don't want to say more for fear of dissipating it.

At any point, instead of starting to type on my keyboard like a maniac this morning I decided to reset and to take a step back from the hectic capital lifestyle. It was my birthday 2 weeks ago, and since people close to me know me, they gave me things and others that would oblige me to pace myself. So I first headed to the Beauty Lounge in Carnaby where I spent an hour getting my nails done in metallic black varnish, surrounded by slow jazzy music and black and white photos from the sixties. Then I went to King's road to get my first ever massage in Aveda.

I don't know if you remember my telling you that I never even considered going to a spa. I cannot get around to the idea of spending a whole day doing nothing: it feels too stressful. Well this time, I took all my clothes off and got under the clean warm sheets of the salon massage bed, and shivered when the masseuse declared we would be done in an hour, but I stayed. Although to be honest after ten minutes in the waiting room, however good this months issue of In Style is, I seriously considered sneaking out before having to release my guard to the masseuse. I am quite happy I didn't. It was cozy and warm, and quiet and peaceful in the room, with music so low that you could just about say that something was being played. And in the beginning I was not too comfortable - as you can imagine I have never been that physical with girls - and when she asked me if I wanted the soft of hard option, I went for the rough one because I thought it was the only way I could survive this non-doing experience: at least I would feel myself live.

The beginning of the session was rough, scarily so. I don't know what knots are exactly, but as she put pression on the diverse muscles in my back, I felt like her hands met and moved around hard bumps that disappeared with a cracking noise and acute pain... Acrid first 10 minutes. Then my mind started going blank in the smoothest possible way, and I fell in a sort of limbo state, thinking of nothing, feeling the movements of my muscles rubbed against steady palms releasing something like negativity out of my body. I felt like a tiny fairy weavel was walking about my body, casting some weird numb softly spell everywhere, and before I knew it I fell asleep.

I remember that at some point the girl went out and asked if I wanted a glass of water, and I mumbled something half awake in answer.

I had not felt that blessfully mindless in some time. Then of course, when a man came back in and turned the light on, waking me up in a start saying: the massage finished 20 minutes ago, we are closing, I did feel a bit embarrassed. But somehow not enough to get tense. Somehow I just feel like I have taken a step back out of reality today.

Maybe ending up in the Bavarian Beer House for a birthday party with girls dressed like they had just come out of a Tyrolian Heidi fairy tale didn't help getting back in touch with the Londonese world.

Living Life in the Fashion fast Lane....

I must say that lately I have been living life in the fashion fast lane, hence my lack of contribution to my beloved blog, so my lovlies this is what i have been up too:

I attended the Company magazine's High Street Awards at 8.30am- yes thats right 8.30am, on Thursday 6th November, so as you can imagine i was super exhausted and not happy that i was still without my morning coffee. So as we ( i invited my assistant Rachael along) were welcomed into the fabulous venue located near the Ritz hotel. All of fashion turned up to toast the winning fashionistas who included ASOS- who picked up the most awards-, River Island and Accessorize. One thing that made up for getting up super early was the goody bag. It definetely beat LFW goody bag hands down...so thank you Company magazine girls, i loved my goodies!

Then last Wednesday 12th November 2008 i found myself in the company of a fabulous fashion friend Fiona. She invited me to come down to All Star Lanes, 95 Brick Lane,London for a bowling game and cosmo's. Arriving a fashionable hour late, i swanned in past the clip board girl, i swiftly had the coat room girl take care of my wool black jacket and umbrella and before i could call Fiona to tell her that i have arrived i spotted her. Dressed in a cute ensemble, I was to happy to see her. Exchanging air kissess and giggly catch up i soon found myself starting to take advantage of the free yummy- super strong- cocktails!

With canapes being served (the chirizo sausage and mango kebab was just amazing) and the drinks flowing I found myself enjoying the company of the fashionistas froms several fashion magazines such as Sunday Time Style and watching the rather cute guys swanning about the place in their bowling shoes. As i sniggered at the bowling shoes on their feet, i was quickly nudged by Fiona because unknowst to me our time was up- we were to bowl, and i was under strict instructions as an honary bride for Conde Nast Brides to bowl like a super star. Bowl like a super star following 5 cocktails was going to be very unlikely, and also the unflattering shoes just killed by cute outfit. So as we drunkenly bowled, we were barely beating our competition an din the end we hardly made it out of the bottom set, but the giggles and the fun more than made up for it. Being an honary Bride sure was fun....

Lastly, my fashion fast lane led to a charity benefit event i attended at the Riverbank Plaza hotel last night- Monday 17th November 2008. I was there to schmooze with the charity socialites and raise money for the Eveline Childrens Trust. As i arrived i was greeted by Julianna the hotels pr girl, who was quick to give me a glass of red wine and personal tour around the venue- the room was made out of glass and offered stunning views of the Thames. Taking it all in i felt the red wine begin to warm me, and i knew that although it was Monday night, there was fun to be had. When my assistant Racheal turned up with her friend Lindsey in tow, we decided to mingle, play roulette with our £100 chips and enjoy the canapes on offer- yummy! All in all it was a good night, so be sure to look for me on the society pages- if you know what i look like that is!

Champagnista Rumours, November 2008

I know, and I apologize in advance, it is not very professional to put anything like unconfirmed fashion whispers on a fashion news website, however, these ones are so good I can't help spreading the gossip.

First, as Vogue Russia celebrates its 10th anniversary, fashion word-of-mouth has it that US Vogue might be seeing the last days of its Wintour dynasty. The dragon lady might be replaced by Vogue Russia editor-in-chief Aliona Doletskaya sooner than you think... Although I dare say Wintour will not leave without a fight.

Funny enough, Naomi Campbell who is on the magazine's cover this month has a whispery life of her own, as she is reportedly about to take Bollywood by storm by playing alongside Indian movie star Akshay Kumar in a movie called Jumbo.

Finally, Dame Westwood is not about to stop being scandalous as people say she is to unveil Baywatch star Pamela Anderson as the new face of Vivienne Westwood. That would definitely give some volume to an already very big brand.

Shhh... fashion secrets not to be revealed too fast...

On tulip skirts

Thurley

Ashish

Amanda Wakeley

Tulip skirts are flourishing everywhere in this wintery season and they do offer a good alternative to the traditional pencil skirt, so tailored, tight an glamorous, and sometimes so difficult to walk in (if you remember my post a few weeks back).

Flared at the hips and narrow at the knees, they are one of the key looks you want to consider if you like to play with shapes and reinvent your silhouette with a twist.

The good thing about a tulip skirt is that you can dress it up or down, and take it from the office to a cocktail party without looking out of place: it is one of these passe-partout garments that you cannot go wrong with.

If you are a true fashionista, this is not necessarily the kind of garment you will be looking for though, because you are bound to be in quest for a statement piece every time you hit the King's road. However, where the tulip skirt becomes interesting is that it is not only feminine, tailored and elegant (if it is well-made), it does not only take the eye off these unnerving extra pounds on your upper thighs, it actually draws the eye on very womanly parts of your body, making you feel all grown-up in the best sense of the word.

I know I will sound bitchy, but before I go on, it has to be said: if you have wide hips and a flat bottom, it will not be a good look for you. Narrow hips is the necessary feature. You don't want to look too expanded.

Now this is out of the way, the brilliant thing about tulip skirts this season is the effort designers put into detailing: if the skirt is low waisted, it might have interesting drapes on the hips. If it is high waisted, look for an atonal or embellished waistband, if it is plain, see if the seams are double-stitched or in a different colour. Whatever happens though, avoid the assymetrical take on it unless it goes just below knee-level, it gives a squat and cheap look.

Then as you know, the more detailing, the more plain and tight the top should be. You can always accessorize the hair if you feel like you don't look quite exuberant enough.

The Hospital Annual party, 14 November 2008

Yesterday night was the annual party of the Hospital, the select member's club near Covent Garden. If you are not familiar with this place, here is a brief history: it was built in the 18th century and used to be a maternity hospital for poor women. When the hospital closed in 1996, Paul Allen purchased the building and renovated it into an amazing space which is slightly reminiscent of the MOMA in New York. You can become a member only if you are working in a creative industry, and the club is really good at supporting and investing in young artits whose talent they believe in.

Yesterday night then, all the Hospital people came together to celebrate in 1930's style in the collection of bars and salons on the four floors of the building. The crowd was stylish like never, men in trench coats, double-breasted striped suits and fedora hats, women in low waisted dresses, feathers in the hair, long ciggarette holders at hand, and you could have believed yourself back in the Prohibition era if you hadn't had free alcohol flowing freely everywhere. The canapes where amazing as well (isn't canape the ultimate fashionista food?) with mini cheese burgers cooked to perfection, finger-sized hot dogs and acras like you wouldn't eat in the Antilles. Lucky there were so many, because they helped me absorb the liters of mojito I downed during the night. I still feel a bit numb and like I left a part of my brain there, but by God it was one of the most amazing evenings of the year.

There was a poker game on in one of the living-rooms, where men pretended to smoke fake cigars bigger than their heads, there was a cabaret show on with performers singing songs from Chicago in corseted outfits, and street artists in every room acting impromptu dramas like a murder of a man by his mistress over a piano. Then the corpse was taken away by two very sullen looking men in trench coats. Everybody was so interesting as well, friendly and in sweet dispositions.

Such a wonderful night, I am still smiling about it... Somehow I haven't felt that happy in a long time.

A luxury passport to the Right Man

Are you happy in love with a wonderful partner? Because I am not, and the more time passes, the more I get worried that I will never find my Prince Charming.

I do not mean to say that he is not out there: I am sure he is. I am not a believer in the soul mate idea, but I think there is more than one man somewhere in the world who would be a fantastic match. The question is: where to find him?

It all comes down to social spaces: it is unlikely to meet your future husband in a bar or in a club, it is unlikely to meet him at work from my experience, and if you have a well-established social life, you always end up meeting the same people. No luck, no love. I have been single since January after being with the same boyfriend for 5 years, and for a few months I was quite enjoying the single life; but now that winter is coming to stay, I am craving for the whole boyfriend warming you feet under the duvet feeling again. And cuddles... I am not a hugging girl, but I do love a tender boy.

You must know the concept of dating websites: Match and My Single Friend are advertising on every wall of every tube station in London, and come to think of it, it makes sense since it can be so hard to meet people outside your usual entourage. However these two are websites I would never go on because they seem desperate and cheap.

And as you know I am luxury girl... Well at least I love luxury, MaxMara boots and Prada shirts (if only I could have only that in my wardrobe).

Yet, today I found this member's club called Elect, which takes the matchmaking experience to a whole different level. It was founded in 2005 by Haley Hill (picture), a girl in her late twenties with a brain and looks to die for. The office is actually a trendy club outside Covent Market where the club's team can organize events and check out their new recruits.

Here is the trick: if you become a member of the club, there is no chance you will end up stuck on an excruciatingly painfully long blind date with an obsessive compulsive boring man too short for your Manolo heels, all organized of course by a friend who 'loves' you.

It will not happen at the Elect Club because they actually have a head-hunting team searching immensely eligible singletons in the hottest places in London. The head-hunters in question are gorgeous, and they go around the capital seeking handsome intelligent young professionals with this extra little something that might make you go head-over-heels if you do have the chance to meet them. This is meritocracy applied to the dating scene, and however cyincal, it is really seductive.

Girls my girls, they are presently looking for a young single woman in her late twenties looking for love, for a TV channel documentary. I am going to put Champagnista M forward (wether she wants it or not) because I belive she would be perfect for this, but do feel free to apply.

Look of the week - Obama's family

I know, I am a little late on this one: it is not breaking news anymore, but I was very busy last week, and I had to say something because Obama's election is truly history in the making.
I did try to get Mr Boss to allow us to come in late the next morning, but unfortunately it didn't happen, so at 1 am, I had to make it to bed, however addictive the TV program might be. Then turning the TV on was the first thing I did in the morning, and I literally could not get myself out of the house before hearing Obama's victory speech through and through. He is the most incredible orator, isn't he: so eloquent, so genuine, so amazingly brilliant at crafting words and rhythm and spreading faith around... Martin Luther King meets Kennedy in his endlessly inspirational speeches! It was the first time in a while I did not actually cringe at hearing an American president say 'God bless America'.
I don't know if you have noticed but the first page of all UK newspapers read a variation on the same title: 'First black president'. First black president... I pondered... But he is not, really. What about Mandela or Senghor? I find it slightly disturbing that papers were so elliptical. He is not the first black president, he is the first American black president. And it is an incredibly avant-garde step for a country where people are still alive who actually knew slavery, but I believe relating to Obama as the first black president discards all African countries as non-presidencies... It sends all of Africa back to the rank of uncivilized third world nations, and if I was a black president, I would be slightly pissed off about it to be honest.
Anyway, coming back to deeper subjects, while every newspaper rejoiced in Obama's election, every fashion blog tore apart Michelle Obama's victory dress mercilessly. Well I don't agree, I think the Narcisso Rodriguez dress she wore was audacious and strong, and that it is about time a first lady didn't have curly sleek permed hair and a flat boring manucured-to-the-point-of-sickness look. Of course Michelle Obama's dress was not quite as airy and glamorous than the original below, but she wore it well and made it just this much classier.
The Obama family all in black and red was gorgeous and passionate, and they are just such a pretty little picture, I couldn't help putting them on.

Agent Provocateur launches Pirates Collection

I don't know if it is the weather, this first grey hair I found on my left temple a few weeks ago (such trauma!), the impossible crush I have on a wonderful wonderful man (of course it is impossible otherwise it wouldn't be so wonderful), checking my HSBC balance to find out it was much lower than I wanted it to be, turning a bloody quarter of a century next sunday (how the hell did it go so fast???!!!) or the no-alcohol-no-shopping diet I have set upon myself this week (what the hell was I thinking???), but I was in a foul mood tonight. Even singing to Rufus Wainwright's 'Hallelujah' at the top of my lungs in my room at the great resentment of my dear flatmates didn't perk me up.

Then I went online for my fashion fix, and I found this: the just-released new Pirates Agent Provocateur collection, with Helena Christensen fencing in super sexy underwear at the top of her skyscraping stilettos. It did cheer me up a bit... you know, just a tad... Agent Provocateur know how to address both men and women fantasies I believe. I would love playing Tinker Bell in this kind of outfits.
Just waiting for my Peter Pan...
