Champagnista Christmas Party, 4 December 08, Maddox

Today is a special day because yesterday was a very special night, and Champagnista M and I should celebrate.

The Christmas party we organized at Maddox turned out to be as successful as we hoped: we had gorgeous people in the room, who consisted in a nice Art and Fashion mix with designers as hot as Emilio de la Morena and Eliot Frieze for Qasimi and talented artists like 'Flash' Restaurant architect David Kohn and the whole team from trendy international fashion gallery MyFace, but the dynamics was also very interesting because everybody was moving around in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It is quite unusual and difficult to create the right vibe at a Fashion party: as you know, fashion can be pretty hierarchical, so I am incredibly pleased with the balance we managed to establish yesterday night.

My guess is it had a lot to do with the amount of vodka in the cocktails: you just couldn't feel it, yet it was definitely there.

Consequently, this morning was pretty hungover. The Golden Moscow sponsorship did its job quite well, the Maddox cocktail barmen did theirs even better, and I had quite a few returns this morning saying 'I never realized I was so drunk yesterday, I had such a great time!'. Maddox canapes were delicate and proficient, but apparently not absolutely sufficient.

However, I was in a bad baby blues mode myself, crying all over the place like a baby... 4 hours of sleep per night for the last 10 days, an impossible crush and a 2 week cold you can't shake off, this is the recipe for a strong after-party blues.

Another one who had a hard time getting out of bed for her secret samples sale this morning was Poppy, from ethical jewellery label Poppy Rocks, who designed one-off jewels made of semi-precious stones and pure silver for our very favourite guests... Dammit, we so hoped there would be one or two goody bags left, even one would have done the trick, we could have turned the Poppy Rocks necklace as our lucky token and passed it to each other as a sign of good luck, whenever one of us needed some.

Yawnnn... I think seriously time to go to bed now... Pictures by Joanna Patterson to come very soon.

The London Accessory Sale - 4 to 8 December 2008

When I am down, I have a few pick-me-up solutions: shopping, cathartic writing (Oh Lord, do you know about this one!), shopping, you tubing 'baby laughing' (this one always works), shopping, and getting drunk on cheap pub wine with my good friend Miss Soho Square, Irish script-writer, an activity which we are expert at and that usually ends up in pretty messy ways (lately chain-smoking and sleeping on a sofa in the office of the production company she works for on Soho square... of the use of baby wipes in the morning!).

And shopping.

Sadly, you-tube is barred from my company's network, so I had to go to extra lengths to find a new internet fix at work. It is easier than you would think though, you just have to look through your spam... The only thing you must remember is, however tempting, do not open the emails, you never know what they might contain! Recently, I have been getting more and more spam emails from... myself. Emails entitled 'make your penis larger' (really?), 'you need casual sex' (that I won't deny!) and today, this one that blew my mind and almost made me break the cardinal opening rule: 'Do you know yourself?'. From me to me, I wondered one second if maybe I had had a schyzophrenic episode without noticing it.

Shopping it was to be this time, because Miss Soho Square is back in Dublin, I am back to a non-drinking try-out (which, you have understood, never lasts more than 48 hours... scary as it is to think I could count my non-drinking days this year on both hands), and my spam messed around with me today.

However, pick-up shopping can be a pretty schizophrenic experience of its own: you want to please yourself and end up struggling to fit your big fat ass in the tightest pair of jeans in the world, jeans that will not close, or will rip if you manage to press this waistband snap button with enough thumb strength. I am not mentioning the revelatory power of fitting rooms, you know as well as I do that the mirror in there will speak to you in a worst tone than the oracle annoucing to Oedipus he would kill his father and spouse his mother.

You will think: the solution if you are depressed, feel fat, and cannot drown your sorrows in wine, is to go shoe-shopping. After all, shoes always fit. No fight with yourself... No fight that is, until you remember that it is the beginning of the month and you are already living on your overdraft.

What is the solution then, do you think to yourself, holding you head in your hands and plunging your home-manucured nails in your temples in dismay. Oh the dangerous dismay of the fashionista who doesn't have money to go shopping! You have to agree, there are not much deeper abysms of anxiety we might reach.

That is when good fashion blogs and good fashion networking becomes indispensable: otherwise you might never hear of secret samples sales. Here is one that you should not miss if you want to go on a jolly and cheering guilt-free accessory shopping spree: The London Accessory Sale, in Chelsea Town Hall on King's Road. It is produced in association with The Secret Sample Sale, it runs from Thursday to Saturday this week, and it is a Gold mine if you have lots of shoes to fill under the Christmas tree... or if you need a pair to add under the tree for Santa's attention.

If this doesn't work out, however desperate, no foolish ex-lover texting: can you just imagine if no answer comes? That would be a total bummer.

Champagnista V

Following a stern word in my ear from Champagnista V, I must add that I know, I know that I was supposed to report about the British Fashion Awards party the day after the party not a week later, but you must forgive me because it has taken me nearly a week to recover, and only now am I able to recall the evening...

It was one that boasted Giles Deacon at the DJ booth spinning music reminiscent of a 1980’s disco, the British Fashion Awards after party was the place to be for any self respecting fashionista. So I made sure I attended and I took my good friend; model Lara Murphy (the face of Johnny Loves Rosie’s AW08 campaign) with me.

It all started as we exited my friends rather swanky 4X4 and headed towards the door where a queue to enter the venue had already started to form. Looking at the line I confidently walked past the people and headed to the front door, waved at the guy with the clipboard who then swiftly opened up the red velvet rope to allow me and my friend to enter- I expected nothing less!

As we walked down the stairs to the cloak room I bumped into Hannah Marshall, a designer whose career I have been closely following. After exchanging air kisses and small talk, my friend and I continued towards the cloak room where we handed over our heavy winter attire. As I waited for my ticket, the model like coat check girl asked for my finger, looking at her confused I repeated “finger”, she replied “yes madam”. Handing her my well manicured finger she pressed it on some pad and said “thank you”. Shrugging my shoulder I said, “my ticket?” to which she said “there will be no ticket madam, the finger print you gave us will be your ticket and when you return to pick up your coat just hand us your finger”. I though what a fool proof idea, all my drunk friends who constantly loose their ticket will no longer have to stress about where they put that “damn ticket”. Smiling at her in return I grabbed my friend’s hand and headed into the party.

After being handed a glass of champagne, I took in the room. I spotted Luella Bartley walking back forth looking for someone who she seemed unable to find, Matthew Williamson strolling about the party making sure everyone spotted him, Nathaniel Gam the “it boy” socialite from the BFC, Erin O’ Connor looking Amazonian, Henry Holland and Agnes Deyn creating a “too cool for school” vibe around them and the as I turned to try and catch the waiters attention so I can get a refill I bump, literally, into Sophie Ellis Bextor and her beau. Starting to apologise and I also counted my lucky stars that I had really emptied that glass of champagne until there was no drop was left to then accidently spill on the Rimmel girl. Refusing any fuss we started talking.

I met Sophie previously 2 seasons ago at the Vogue Italia party where she looked amazingly stunning and was such a nice person that I wanted to poke her to make sure she was real. Meeting her again my opinion of her did not change. She refused my apologies gracefully and asked who I was. As we conversed I thought “this Rimmel Girl rocks, move over Kate your days are numbered”. Then all of sudden I asked “Can I take a picture of you”, to which she responded “that is no fun, unless we both take a photo together”. Smiling at her answer I literally threw the camera at my friend, and demanded that she snap the photo, and then demanding her to snap a second one in case the first wasn’t to my liking. Then after my pap moment I grabbed yet another glass of bubbly and the party for me truly began… I am sure that at some point in the early hours of the morning when the party started to turn into fashionable heaving mess of people I yelled at the Giles in the DJ booth, “hey you, put on a bit of 80’s Madonna I feel like a jive!”, and believe me when I say I am still trying get over that faux pas!

The French New Wave

Should it be called the New French New Wave? Not quite as catchy...

It has been one of these days: I am tired, I have silly questions in my head, I have been dragging the same cold on and on for the last 2 weeks (I think my teeth are turning black from the Echinoa elixir I am actually drinking from the bottle without even taking the time to dilute it in water anymore), I have a weird onion after-taste in my mouth although I have eaten only grapes tonight (really couldn't be bothered cooking in the middle of the emotional turmoil I have fallen in), I am trying to concentrate but the only place I can write is in the living room, my flatmates are in watching MI5 and the the very cute one is commenting quite loudly (even squeaking, how on earth did he come up with this sound?!) on the James Bond-type whereabouts...

PMS probably but at this point I just ... want... to... go in the middle of a forest somewhere and scream... AaaaAaAH!

This is a bloody mess I feel like I am stuck in one of these French New Wave movies, like Duras' Moderato Cantabile, where the narrative structure is completely broken into a thousand million pieces and there are slow-downs and forwards and it's all black , white, way too slow and not happening and when it does happen it just explodes in your face with a silent smile before it had the time to start.

You know? The New Wave. And there it goes: see these photos taken by Paolo Roversi for the New York Times: the project is entitled the New French Wave. Black, white, minimalistic, passionate, broken, obscure and introvert and so scary when it comes to the Cassel one but so incredibly revelatory? That's not too far from my mood. Well I am obviously flattering myself because I am in no way a millionth as intense as these people. In these pictures. This is about the point where fashion and psychology meet and tear apart from each other... The brightest darkest of French cinema stars and style icons of this time in Roversi's merciless lens.

Thanksgiving Fashion dinner at Maddox

Thanksgiving 50's American style

Eyes hidden behind my black Jacqui O's to avoid direct contact with the light of the computer screen, I am nursing the most accomplished hangover I have had in a long time. If this fate had fallen on Champagnista M's head, I can tell you right here right now that she would be curled up in agony in the left corner of her sofa with a hot water bottle on her stomach.

I am a veteran and -not ashamed to say it, too much of a party girl to deny it- a social drunkard, so I am at work, and even managed to make it on time this morning after 3 hours' sleep... and finishing off my flatmate's peanut butter with a spoon at 4am.

Dreadful flashback. I am not sure that the fat saved me from a worse morning feel or made it better, I am pretty nauseous, very slow, and absolutely appalled at the idea I ate about 600 full-fat calories that are going to sit straight on my ass in a couple of hours. I might have to stop eating all together for the next two days… Although it doesn’t seem like a problem right now, since I absolutely cannot stomach the thought of any type of food. Oh the bad hangover pun! If I was not so numb and incapable of any emotion at present, I think I might cry.

I did have a pretty good night yesterday: shame to have to pay for it this bad now… I was invited to a fashion dinner at Maddox, which is the place to be on Thursday nights like Whisky Mist is on Wednesday nights. I arrived there at 10pm, because the dinner started fashionably late, and found myself in the company of models, models and models, and Burlington Man, whom I should now call Maddox Man but since he has (definitely) not changed since he moved from the Burlington Club it might be a little misleading. He is now dating a beautiful Russian model with big breasts and dove wide blue eyes, who gave me a detailed enough account of the afternoon they had just spent in his bed… Obviously she did not know I had been there, but why on earth would she trust me with this kind of information after having met me 15 minutes before? I swear to God sometimes I wish I were not French and girls did not think I want to hear all about their sex lives…

Burlington Man being American, he hosted this Thanksgiving dinner New York style, and I must admit the food was gorgeous. No Thanksgiving starter, but a Thanksgiving starting tradition where everybody had to say what they were thankful for (you imagine the marshmallowesque comments people came up with, someone had to be outrageous and say that they were thankful for the money they made before the end of the round!). Fortunately it didn’t end with ‘God bless us all’ because on the subject of God’s existence, as Sacha Guitry would put it, now would be a good time for a small apparition… I don’t like religious feasts that much, as you can imagine.

At any rate I believe Thanksgiving is not so much a religious celebration as a commemoration of a massive slaughter by the first American pilgrims. All in all though, the lobster tail was delicate, and the turkey beautiful, and the mini pumpkin pies quite adorable. Even if I feel like I could puke just thinking of them now. The company was jolly and very beautiful, and it looked like the girls had agreed on a 1950’s wavy hairdo and red lips unity, although it was apparently a total coincidence. Not necessarily the most challenging of conversations, but there is something truly magic about beautiful and well-dressed people: contemplating them gives you pleasure like you would feel only at watching a moving work of art.

And the wine was good. Very. Good. Ooooooh, my head!

Matthew Williamson for H&M

H&M have just launched their new Winter line created by comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo, and they found the way to bring some more exciting news on the fashion table by announcing a new hot design partnership with a colourful English Boy we love: Matthew Williamson.

As you know, cheap clothes are cheap clothes and the quality is never guaranteed, but it will be a collection to watch for when it hits the stores in April 2009. Don't forget the Stella McCartney and Cavalli pieces from the previous collaborations with the Swedish warehouse did not last long, so don't miss the opening day.

My-Wardrobe.com launches Men's Accessories line

One thing I dread about Christmas is the shopping quest you have to go on for the men you cherish. Even when it comes to my brothers, whom I love dearly and know to the tips of my black fingernails, Christmas shopping turns into a real crusade. I usually end up getting them a Quentin Tarentino or James Bond retrospective, because I can never be sure I will find a perfect, stylish, made-for-them addition to their wardrobe (not to mention that one of them is working for Rostchild so I cannot quite match his expensive tastes nowadays... damn money!).

However, My-Wardrobe.com just launched a shopping online page devoted to men's accessories, and they have a really interesting selection of designer wallets, ties, cufflinks and more cheerful items like a set of colourful Paul Smith toothbrushes (which I am considering purchasing for my banker of a brother just to see his face when he opens the giftwrap, since he always says that he doesn't need anything and I should get him a book or something because he can afford whatever he wants... Looks like the credit crunch hasn't touched him yet).

Another choice would be the beautiful Mulberry leather messenger above, but I think I might have to wait for My-Wardrobe online sales before I can fall in love with this bag on my brother's behalf.

Vintage Academy

I have just learned a new word. It is the fourth this week, after 'weevil' (which I turned into ‘weavel’ for sentimental purposes, my weavel is going to be my little flame-haired inspiring fairy in harsh times from now on) , 'hose' (this one was applied to a fireman stripper during the conversation so I got a little confused), and 'knackered' (which I looked up but for some reason it is not in the Oxford dictionary). I like words, I revel in words, I just love mix and matching them to craft a purposeful, meaningful, beautiful speech. I never quite manage it though, but the game of tending to it is quite rewarding in itself.

Anyway, today's word is 'academe' and I came upon it looking for fashion news on the internet. If you look at Wikipedia, which I am a total sucker for (I confess I have quite a library rat side, shame on me), you learn that ‘Academia or Academe or the Academy is a collective term for the scientific and cultural community engaged in higher education and research'. I knew Academy of course, and I am still wondering if there is not a twist to ‘Academe’ with an E. Especially since I have heard that anyone could actually write articles on wikipedia, so that their content must not be accurate all the time (tricky knowledge).

Vintage Academe is launching tomorrow, Monday 24th November: it is a new shopping online website dedicated with all its soul to vintage fashion, and if you follow its editorial page it will soon educate you into a competent vintage fashion shopper.

Three women got together to start this project: Whistles founder and former Liberty creative director Lucille Lewin, fashion journalist Belinda Morris , and Clare Nicholls, vintage fashion lover and financial director for the company. The trio came up with the brilliant and unthought of idea to bring poetry to online fashion retail. The website proposes a selective choice of unspeakably stylish fashion pieces from the 20th century (like the white tailored Courreges coat above), jewelry, hats and different accessories as well as luxury after-care products and tips to keep the articles you buy online in good state. You can also purchase vintage issues of fashion titles like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar from the earliest times of these magazines, and go on the Academe editorial page to learn more about vintage fashion and throughout the world vintage fashion events -r 'academes', as they are called if it is one of their own events).

The items on sale are not that cheap, but every single one of them is unique and out of time: one of these garments that are so beautifully made it will live across trends and time to bring elegance today from surprisingly far away times, reminding you that style has no age. It just has colours, shapes and is brimming with life.

On Beauty

I have reached the stars today.
It is 2 am. I have not blogged in a few days, because I have been so incredibly busy working and sorting out the next Champagnista party, which is arriving at full pace now, but today I am confident it is done. The venue, the sponsors, the music, the photographer, some canapes. I think everything is there, finally. And as for the people, I know you people will turn up, and it is going to be a gorgeous night.

So today, as much as I thought I should get online when I woke up, I decided to take a step back and allow myself a little bit if introspectivity (sorry if I am coming up with weird neologisms, not being English I feel like I'm allowed to take a break from English rules and give way to some raw creativity sometimes).

I guess it might have to do with some kind of poetic vibe... in the air... in the dark jet black of this clear London night sparkled with scattered stars. I have slept 'that' much since last monday, and it is not that much. And yesterday I had promised myself a quiet night, and then somehow... Well somehow I got back home at 4:30am after a very unexpected night. Magic is better unspoken so I don't want to say more for fear of dissipating it.

At any point, instead of starting to type on my keyboard like a maniac this morning I decided to reset and to take a step back from the hectic capital lifestyle. It was my birthday 2 weeks ago, and since people close to me know me, they gave me things and others that would oblige me to pace myself. So I first headed to the Beauty Lounge in Carnaby where I spent an hour getting my nails done in metallic black varnish, surrounded by slow jazzy music and black and white photos from the sixties. Then I went to King's road to get my first ever massage in Aveda.

I don't know if you remember my telling you that I never even considered going to a spa. I cannot get around to the idea of spending a whole day doing nothing: it feels too stressful. Well this time, I took all my clothes off and got under the clean warm sheets of the salon massage bed, and shivered when the masseuse declared we would be done in an hour, but I stayed. Although to be honest after ten minutes in the waiting room, however good this months issue of In Style is, I seriously considered sneaking out before having to release my guard to the masseuse. I am quite happy I didn't. It was cozy and warm, and quiet and peaceful in the room, with music so low that you could just about say that something was being played. And in the beginning I was not too comfortable - as you can imagine I have never been that physical with girls - and when she asked me if I wanted the soft of hard option, I went for the rough one because I thought it was the only way I could survive this non-doing experience: at least I would feel myself live.

The beginning of the session was rough, scarily so. I don't know what knots are exactly, but as she put pression on the diverse muscles in my back, I felt like her hands met and moved around hard bumps that disappeared with a cracking noise and acute pain... Acrid first 10 minutes. Then my mind started going blank in the smoothest possible way, and I fell in a sort of limbo state, thinking of nothing, feeling the movements of my muscles rubbed against steady palms releasing something like negativity out of my body. I felt like a tiny fairy weavel was walking about my body, casting some weird numb softly spell everywhere, and before I knew it I fell asleep.

I remember that at some point the girl went out and asked if I wanted a glass of water, and I mumbled something half awake in answer.

I had not felt that blessfully mindless in some time. Then of course, when a man came back in and turned the light on, waking me up in a start saying: the massage finished 20 minutes ago, we are closing, I did feel a bit embarrassed. But somehow not enough to get tense. Somehow I just feel like I have taken a step back out of reality today.

Maybe ending up in the Bavarian Beer House for a birthday party with girls dressed like they had just come out of a Tyrolian Heidi fairy tale didn't help getting back in touch with the Londonese world.
